Mid-Face Lifting

WHAT IS A MID-FACE LIFT?

As we age, gravity and the loss of fat greatly impact facial fullness. One area in which these effects are most noticeable is in the mid-face area. The mid-face is from your lower eyelids to your nasolabial folds, which are the lines from the nose to the corner of the mouth. Over time, the mid-face area loses volume (flattens). This can make us appear more tired or older than we actually are. The effect on our face is similar to what happens when you let the air out of a balloon: the skin loosens and folds while lines or wrinkles begin to appear.

Smooth facial contours and augmented mid-face/cheek areas are the mark of youth and beauty. A mid-face lift can beautifully and naturally restore the youthful contour and three-dimensional projection in the mid-face area. Fat may also be transferred to the face during a mid-face lift to maximize contour and projection. There are several techniques for mid-face lifting and deciding which technique is best for you is based on a variety of factors including your current facial structure, previous facial surgeries (if applicable), and your aesthetic goals. Non-surgical face lifts can also be more affordable options without the down-time of a major surgery and still give you the results you are looking for. Dr. Paul will explain in detail which options are best for you and why. If you are considering facial enhancement, a mid-face lift may be an excellent option for you.

When choosing a surgeon to perform a mid-face lift, look for a specialist like Dr. Paul who limits his practice to facial procedures. He has a great amount of experience, expertise and knowledge of the anatomy of the mid-face including all surrounding areas, as well as special training in aesthetics and ultra smooth wound closures for scar minimization. A reconstructive and cosmetic specialist like Dr. Paul will also take extra time to address the minute aesthetic details for a natural, non-surgical result.

IDEAL CANDIDATES

Patients who are just beginning to notice the beginning signs of aging to the mid-face and neck are ideal candidates for these procedures. A mid-face lift targets the area around the nose, eyes, and corners of the mouth. These procedures are particularly effective for patients seeking cheek elevation when the neck and areas beneath the chin do not require lifting.

PROCEDURE OPTIONS

FAT GRAFTING: Fat grafting and transfers can be used to increase volume in the face. Fat grafting involves removing fat from another area on the patient’s body to put into certain regions of the face that start to lose fat. Only tiny amounts of fat are removed so this should not be equated with liposuction. Fat transfer is the injection of fat to various areas of the body to increase volume. Fat transfer of viable fat cells can augment the treated area, such as the face, cheeks and chin.

FILLER: Filler injectables such as Juvederm, Restylane Lyft and Voluma can help restore facial volume, creating a marked improvement especially in the mid-face and cheek region. The good news is that these are all non-surgical face lifts which yield great results. However, fillers and Botox are not permanent and need to be repeated.

SOOF LIFT: A SOOF-lift can be performed on patients whose lower eyelids are drooping downwards and the tissue loss and fat are causing eye bags. The term SOOF stands for Sub Orbicularis Oris Fat. This is also the tissue that descends to give you hollow cheekbones and nasolabial folds. A SOOF Lift is a type of mid-face lift which can help with the physical signs of aging. By releasing the arcus marginalis (the tissue separating the SOOF from the ocular fat) one can combine the two fatty areas and elevate the orbicularis muscle and other tissue to correct the deformity with a blepharoplasty. One could elevate just the SOOF and surrounding tissues with a less invasive procedure using sutures. However, if you are looking for something minimally invasive, fat grafting or filler may be better options for you to achieve the mid-face lift.

RECOVERY

With filler, while the treatment is performed in about 30 minutes to an hour and effects are immediate, you may need 1-2 weeks to see the full results of your treatment and recover from any bruising and swelling. With fat grafting, patients typically experience 10 days recovery time for both the donor location where fat cells are extracted and the treatment area where fat cells are implanted in the cheeks and neck. With a SOOF lift, the recovery may range between 1 to 2 weeks. The swelling and bruising from lower lid surgery accumulates in the lower lids and sometimes extends in the cheek area. Following the recommended postoperative care and use of ointments or treatments prescribed by Dr. Paul is important to reduce the recovery downtime. Strenuous activities such as lifting heavy weights are not recommended for the immediate postoperative period for any procedure. Dr. Paul and his great staff will make your decision easier by going over with you the list of activities you may resume the day after surgery. RESULTS

Results for all mid-face lift procedures are apparent shortly after the minimal swelling and bruising has dissipated. For filler, you will likely want to schedule appointments about 5 months out to maintain your results. Because fat grafting to the cheek and Soof lift surgery usually yield long-lasting results, maintenance appointments will be scheduled few and far between once the patient has fully healed.

OUTCOME

In addition to their physical, aesthetic results, patients often feel a rejuvenated sense of self following a mid-face lift at any of our convenient Central Texas locations.
