How Microneedling Work
The SkinPen Precision system is the only Class II, FDA cleared microneedling device legally marketing in the U.S.
The SkinPen microneedling device causes controlled micro-injuries that stimulate the body’s natural wound healing process. The micro-injuries trigger the release of cytokines and growth factors that lead to remodeling of collagen and elastin.1
There are three phases to the wound repair process:
- Phase I: Inflammation.
Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood flow and begin to create new tissue.
- Phase II: Proliferation.
The wound is re-built with new granulation cells, as well as a temporary (type III) collagen and elastin, which are part of the extracellular matrix. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops.
- Phase III: Remodeling.
The wound has been replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels. The type III collagen in the newly formed tissue is replaced with stronger type I collagen, which can contract to create a tightening or “shrink wrap” effect on the skin.
Microneedling is your new best friend when it comes to combatting the appearance of facial acne scars. Ask for SkinPen® by name to get the impressive results demonstrated by our clinical study and the safety of the only FDA-cleared device available.
Here’s what you can expect from a SkinPen treatment:
- A plan for optimal results.
Your physician may recommend a course of procedures based on your individual goals. Maintenance of your procedure might require multiple treatments.
- A comfortable procedure.
Based on your needs, your physician will likely apply a topical numbing agent to the treatment area.
- A short procedure time.
The treatment will likely take 30 minutes to one hour.
- A mild sensation.
Most patients report feeling only the slight vibration of SkinPen during the procedure.
- Minimal post-procedure effects.
The skin will appear slightly pink to red immediately post-procedure, similar to a mild to moderate sunburn. Additionally, the most common treatment responses experienced were dryness, rough skin, tightness, redness, itching, peeling, discomfort, tenderness, and burning. These conditions resolved over time without any further complications. Please see patient labeling for detailed safety information.
- Soothing aftercare.
Your clinician will provide Skinfuse® LIFT, a clean, non-cytotoxic hydrogel used to prevent the skin from drying out post-treatment.
Microneedling with PRP (platelet rich plasma), or without, addresses signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, as well as skin problems like acne scars, thinning or crepey skin, and stretch marks.
Micro-needle therapy is minimally invasive, causing thousands of microscopic injuries across the treatment area. These injuries induce the body’s natural healing factors, sending collagen and elastin to repair and rejuvenate the skin. This thickens the skin and reduces signs of aging.
Applying a topical treatment after micro-needling allows the treatment to penetrate deeply into the skin, enhancing its efficacy and allowing for more even distribution of the product. Derived from the patient’s own blood, Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP, contains several growth factors and cytokines that aid in cell communication and promote healing.
The Advantages of Applying PRP
The micro-needling procedure creates thousands of microscopic channels in the skin, making it fertile ground for a topical application like PRP. To obtain PRP, your doctor places a vial of your own blood into a centrifuge, separating the platelets from the blood. He or she then places the platelets into the centrifuge to obtain the platelet rich plasma, proven in numerous studies to speed healing and repair for everything from fine lines to hair loss.
Applying PRP after micro-needling is more effective than direct injections of PRP, as the micro channels allow even distribution across the treatment area as well as absorption into deeper layers of the skin. PRP’s growth factors go to work in these deeper skin layers, encouraging collagen growth as well as rejuvenation of collagen cells.
As a treatment for fine lines and wrinkles, both micro-needling and PRP work well. However, their true power is unleashed when used together, as benefits are amplified and healing time is reduced.
Visible improvements typically appear about 2-4 weeks from the time of treatment. However, optimal results are noticeable after 6 months with additional follow up treatments. Therefore, a series of 3-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is ideal for most patient. Although, some conditions such as; deep wrinkles, stretch marks, and extreme acne scaring could take up to 6-8 treatments for best results.
